River TayIn 1989 Local and National Press proclaimed Perth as being a “Foul City not Fair City”.

The negative impression was unwelcome, but the wake-up call prompted swift action. In response, a community-based working partnership between the private, public and voluntary sectors was formed to challenge the headline.

The initiative was initially known as Take a Pride in Perth, but in 1990 the name changed to Perth in Bloom.  In 2007 the decision was taken to re-brand the campaign further. This time the title beautiful Perth was chosen to reflect the growing compass of the campaign.

The 'Perth in Bloom' campaign was in many ways ahead of its time in promoting sustainable environmental initiatives throughout the City. Recently it was felt that the name didn't fully reflect the other important  themes within the campaign - things like biodiversity, sustainable development, cleanliness and local  environmental quality.  To most people the name Perth in Bloom only meant flowers and displays and so we hope the new title reflects these other elements. The superb floral and hanging basket displays loved by residents and tourists will still, however, form an important part of the campaign!

Lethem projectA recognised Scottish charity, beautiful Perth has grown considerably since its early days.  It continues to be a very active environmental enhancements partnership involving:

  • Business
  • Commerce
  • Volunteers and Community Groups
  • Schools
  • Perth and Kinross Council

This partnership has been acknowledged in awards won by the campaign over its lifetime.
