Bertha Gets a Spruce-up Print E-mail
Bertha, the signature snail in the Leisure Pool show bed, was given a pre-judging spruce-up by beautifulPerth committee members.

beautifulPerth volunteers set about weeding and dead-heading the latest Leisure Pool show bed feature - a snail called Bertha! Bertha is a colourful mix of marigold, lobelia and begonia and she may have some ornamental cabbage to head for prior to Beautiful Scotland judging on 11 August.

The snail symbolises Cittaslow - Perth has blazed another trail by being Scotland's first Cittaslow town - and the workers decided that the name Bertha suited her well. The name will be picked out in the woodchips that surround the work of art and protect it from weed invasion. Cittaslow is a fight back at a fast-food world - it stresses the value of locally-sourced sustainable food ingredients, cooked slowly and well for maximum nutritional value and many of Perth's notable restaurants have signed up to the idea. Bertha hopes that she'll make an impact not only on the judges but on the many local people and visitors that pass the high profile site in the course of their journeys.
